A lifelong advocate for reentry and recovery, Joyce envisioned a supportive space where formerly incarcerated people could access resources and rebuild from a stable foundation. That vision became Cornerstone.

A behind-the-scenes look at the work that funds The Cornerstone Residence — the veteran recovery home our founders Jim & Joyce Sed built in Clairton, PA.
The Cornerstone Residence Recovery Home for Veterans is a nonprofit sober living space for former service members. Since opening in 2023, it has given more than a dozen veterans a stable foundation to rebuild their lives.
Joyce Sed spent two-and-a-half decades as a probation officer. She saw firsthand how difficult reentry can be — how quickly a lack of stable housing can send someone back into the environment that caused their initial incarceration. "The recidivism rate is crazy," she said. "It's collateral damage."
Jim Sed brought his own story to the mission. After an honorable Navy discharge in the 1980s and years of battling opiate addiction, Jim found his faith during a 2006 jail stay when a cellmate read him Bible verses during withdrawal. "It plays a role in every aspect of my life," he said. Today, that faith — and Joyce — are his North Stars.
The two met through Zero Six Eight, a Pittsburgh incubator supporting ventures from formerly incarcerated entrepreneurs. Together they bought a vacant church and rectory in Clairton in 2018. A structure fire and a five-year legal fight delayed the opening until 2023 — but Cornerstone was always going to happen.
Today, profits from Tri-Link Contracting flow directly back into Cornerstone. When you hire Tri-Link, you're not just fixing a roof. You're funding someone's second chance.
Every roof we install becomes part of a larger story.
Joyce and Jim Sed both walked very different roads to the same place — a belief that, with the right support, people can rebuild.
